One of the most discussed topics when studying abroad is the living situation. OHLA offers a wide range of accommodation options, however, the most debated among them is homestay with a local family. Homestays can be a hugely rewarding experience, as it presents an unparalleled opportunity for an authentic cultural exchange. Living with your host family will enable you to practice English with native speakers in a comfortable setting. Additionally, your adopted family will help meeting new people and exploring the city a less stressful task.
The goal for every host family placement is a mutually rewarding and educational exchange. Therefore, sufficient preparation and orientation are imperative to help ensure a successful interchange for all parties. All OHLA host families are thoroughly screened and given training on becoming a host parent. Such training includes:
- Information on student’s background (family, school, customs, and religion)
- The academic program in which the student is enrolled in
- Handbook on potential conflicts and ways to overcome any problems
- How to be a good host family and how to help your exchange student succeed
